Detailed Description:
What Will You Learn:
Students explore constructivist learning theory as it applies to educational technology as a tool in the learning environment and examine the impact of technology in relation to the changing role of the teacher.
Teachers need both technical skills and instructional know how to use computers to support student learning. Readings, activities, assignments, and discussions are designed to develop a broad professional knowledge base on teaching and learning with technology across the K-12 curriculum. Students will consider the following questions: How can computers help students learn? How can I teach with technology rather than about technology?
What is Required:
Because this is a required course for the College of Education, it mirrors the rigor and interest of the face to face course, including interaction with other students and group work. Just like a face-to-face course, it will take time each week for discussion, required assignments, readings and practice. You will work with a group or a partner for several assignments, and will need to meet together online.
One or two web conferencing sessions will be held, scheduled with student input.
There is an important component about teaching included that will build to your methods courses. You should leave the course more prepared for teaching, with some good technology skills and hopefully, a fresh look at learning that will carry you through as you begin the best job in the world, teaching!
A successful student will need to check into the course 4 - 5 times during the week.
Required Meeting Times:
- Required Face to Face meeting, Saturday, August 29 10:00 am – 1:00 pm, UNM Main Campus, TEC Building, Room 201.
- Two required online synchronous meetings will be held during the semester. Dates and times will be determined with the input of the class.
- There will be an online orientation the first week of the course.
Required Text(s):
You will need headphones with microphone for Web Conferencing and interacting with the class in a Virtual World.
Student membership in the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) is required instead of a text. Students will be given information as to how to join the first week of class. For student cost see http://www.iste.org.
To complete work for this class you will need the Computer Requirements and Skill Requirements listed at http://online.unm.edu.
Additionally, you will need to have access to the Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint and Excel), preferably version XP or newer.
Headphones and microphone for Web Conferencing are required. We recommend USB equipment: entry models are widely available through computer supply stores, online, or at the UNM Bookstore. A high speed internet connection is needed for these sessions. Do not plan on using a wireless Internet connection unless you have tested the audio quality in advance.
