Detailed Description:
Written construction documents are an important form of communication in the construction industry whereby the owner states their requirements, the architect/engineer describes the design and the builder (contractor) conveys the materials that will be used and provides the details for the project. The documents include such items as the bidding requirements, agreement, general conditions, specifications and others. This course has been developed to supplement what has typically been "on-the-job" training. This course presents the overall picture of project phases and how the text documents relate to each other and to the drawings. In addition, the course gives detail on the content, format and issues related to each type of document. This course has been developed over many years by the Construction Specification Institute (CSI).

Successful completion of this course requires reliable online access, which can be achieved in the C&J Building computer labs. Successful completion also requires serious commitment and personal responsibility. Online courses require the same - or even more - work and time than do their traditional counterparts, as well as significantly more self-motivation. You will be expected to keep up with online lectures, assignments and tests and to submit required work on deadline, especially since this course lasts just four weeks, yet packs in the content of an entire semester. Expect to spend at least 15 hours per week on this course.

Full semester: 1/20/2009 - 5/15/2009

Course Description:
This fully online course will focus on literature as rhetorical discourse, or a purposeful exchange between writer and reader, through examining books banned in America in the 1990s and 21st century. We will read at least one book challenged or banned for each of the three most common reasons: because they 1) are contrary to readers’ religious views, 2) contain profane or objectionable language, or 3) contain sexual content which readers find offensive. We will consider the social forces at work in specific cases in which these books were challenged and analyze the cultural and rhetorical significance of the banned books as well as the controversy surrounding them.
Assignments will include several short writing assignments, online discussion, and two longer essays.
Prerequisite: ENGL 102 or its equivalent.
Required Text(s):
Banned in the U.S.A. by Herbert N. Foerstel Introduction to Rhetorical Theory, 2nd ed. by Gerard Hauser
Possible primary texts (TBD) include:
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury,
Down these Mean Streets by Piri Thomas,
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, and
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling.

In English 220.012, you will use gender and popular culture as a lens for writing about books, film, and your own experience. Since this course will take place completely online, a class blog and discussion board will take the place of face-to-face class time. We will ask questions about and examine literature and films that deal with both "mainstream" and "alternative" views of gender, as well as identify ways we can better understand each other's experiences as humans in the modern age. Your assignments will include publishable quality book and film reviews and an extended blog piece told from the point of view of someone of the opposite gender, whom you will interview. Our texts will be films, "popular" novels, and scholarly articles in gender studies. In this course, we will begin a dialogue that hopefully will extend into the rest of your life, to better equip you to interact with other human beings, as well as write about them. An online course requires an extra measure of self-discipline, as much of your work will be self-directed.
Required Text(s):
The Spy Who Loved Me by Ian Fleming (paperback)
Everyone Worth Knowing by Lauren Weisburger (paperback)
Articles as assigned
Films (TBA)

All texts will be available at the UNM bookstore, on WebCT, on reserve, and are also readily available online at Amazon.com, or Netflix.

MSET 365 - Microcomputers in Schools (Online)
Full semester: 1/20/2009 - 5/15/2009
Special course fee: $110.00
Detailed Description:
Students explore constructivist learning theory as it applies to educational technology as a tool in the learning environment and examine the impact of technology in relation to the changing role of the teacher. Teachers need both technical skills and instructional “know how” to use computers to support student learning. Readings, activities, assignments, and discussions are designed to develop a broad professional knowledge base on teaching and learning with technology across the K-12 curriculum. Students will consider the following questions: How can computers help students learn? How can I teach with technology rather than about technology?
Because this is a required course for the College of Education, it mirrors the rigor and interest of the face to face course, including interaction with other students and group work. Just like a face-to-face course, it will take time each week for required assignments, readings and practice. There is an important component about teaching included that will build to your methods courses. You should leave it more prepared for teaching, with some good technology skills and hopefully, a fresh look at learning that will carry you through as you begin the best job in the world, teaching! A successful student will need to check into the course often during the week.
Required Meeting Times
|
-
|
Required Face to Face meeting, Saturday, January 24, 1-4 pm, UNM Main Campus, TEC 100.
|
|
-
|

|
|
-
|
There will be an online orientation the first week of the course.
|
Required Text
No text required. Student membership in the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) is required instead of a text. Students will be given information as to how to join the first week of class. For student cost see http://www.iste.org.
To complete work for this class you will need to have access to the Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint and Excel), preferably version XP or newer.
You will need headphones with microphone for Web Conferencing.

SPCD 519 - The Application of Applied Behavior Analysis in the Special Education Classroom
Full semester: 1/20/2009 - 5/15/2009
Special course fee: $110.00
Detailed Description:
This is an introductory course in the application of behavioral principles in educational settings. Principles and strategies introduced in this course are derived from an extensive research base in applied behavior analysis and effective teaching with learners who have disabilities and with those who are typically developing. The course presents information on the definition and measurement of behavior, principles of reinforcement and associated strategies, systematic program development, basic formats for classroom instruction, and techniques for monitoring student progress. It also includes information and discussion on the responsible and ethical use of behavioral strategies with all students.
The course emphasizes procedures for increasing academic and socially appropriate behavior through simulations and practice exercises. Review of research methodologies and the critical analysis of research literature in the area of applied behavior analysis are required. The course will consist of a blend of lecture (recorded online), small group exercises, and discussion. Students will engage in practice exercises in which they will apply techniques learned in taking the class to everyday classroom or social situations. They will also complete a functional behavior assessment with a student. Doing so allows sustained practice in understanding the factors affecting a social or academic behavior, and developing and implementing an appropriate intervention plan to assist the individual to decrease problem behaviors and replace these with appropriate ones.
Orientation:
There will be an orientation session held at the UNM campus on 1/24/09 in EDUC 206 from 1:00-3:30 pm. This session will provide an introduction to the course and its requirements, including the technical requirements of taking an online course. It will also offer an opportunity to meet the instructor, technical support person, and other classmates.
Required Meeting Times:
There will be two face-to-face sessions at UNM. The first will be held on 1/24/09 in EDUC 206 from 1:00-3:30 pm. (See above.) The second face-to-face session will be held on 5/9/09 in EDUC 206 from 1:00-3:30pm. During the second meeting on May 9th, students will present the findings from their functional assessment projects, and we'll have a wrap up of the course.
