Successful completion of this course requires reliable online access, which can be achieved in the C&J Building computer labs. Successful completion also requires serious commitment and personal responsibility. Online courses require the same - or even more - work and time than do their traditional counterparts, as well as significantly more self-motivation. You will be expected to keep up with online lectures, assignments and tests and to submit required work on deadline, especially since this course lasts just eight weeks, yet packs in the content of an entire semester. Expect to spend at least 15 hours per week on this course.
Required Text(s):
Ethics in Journalism, 6th Edition. Ron F. Smith. Blackwell Publishing. 2008.

Except for the field trip all class work can be done at the convenience of the participants but there will be strictly adhered to weekly deadlines. Participants should anticipate working 12-15 hours per week on class-related activities and projects. The course is taught in a supportive, patient and encouraging on-line environment.

Detailed Description:
Psych 240-040 Brain & Behavior online course for B.A. candidates
We live in a time of breathtaking discovery regarding the processes by which mammalian nervous systems are formed and function in everyday behavior. Psych 240 is designed to provide the basic conceptual tools needed to understand these discoveries, evaluate news reports, seek further information, and even begin to pursue a career in this area. This course will review in detail the neuroanatomy and physiology of the nervous system, so those without basic background knowledge of cell biology and genetics would have a very difficult time keeping up.
Academic prerequisites: The only formal prerequisite is Psych 105 or (Biol 123/124L or 201).
Structure of course:
This course requires active participation throughout the semester. There are weekly assignments. Students who do not log in to the course and submit the first assignment within the first 10 days of the semester will be dropped from the course. The enrollment cap for this course CAN NOT be increased. There will be no exceptions. However students who enroll but do not participate will be dropped, so some places may open up on the final day of the drop/add period.
There will be required weekly class chat sessions online: one will be available on Saturday mornings and one additional weeknight to be determined by class vote. Grade is based on on 18 quizzes + 5 unit exams + 5 special topic online lectures with post-tests + term paper + smaller written assignments. The 5 unit exams will require proctors.
Support services are available to help students operate online, but ultimately IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO ACCESS THE COURSE SOFTWARE WITHIN THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF ENROLLMENT and seek any assistance required in order to successfully logon to WebCT course site and submit assignments.
For the online sessions, you will need:
- A set of speakers or headphones, and a microphone. We recommend USB equipment: entry models are widely available through computer supply stores, online, or at the UNM Bookstore.
- A high speed internet connection is needed for these sessions. Wireless Internet connections are not recommended, however may be used if tested for audio quality prior to web conferencing.
